Strong winds from the right force the peloton into several echelons. Riding near the front of the peloton helps you get into the first echelon, where the strongest riders are. Photo © by Graham Watson
Watch out for changes in the width of the road when riding in an echelon. If the road suddenly narrows, the riders who just moved from the recovery line to the advancing line will either ride off the road or find themselves in the gutter without a draft. Look ahead and anticipate narrowing roads. You may have to split the echelon or attack to the front of it and let the other riders fight for position in the back.
